Message from the Mr. Gates

Welcome to Alamitos Intermediate School’s website.  The goal of this website is to provide you with useful and important information about our school.  Within the website are various links that you are encouraged to view.  We hope that you find them useful.

The entire Alamitos staff is dedicated to the success of our students.  We work hard to prepare our students for the challenges of high school and beyond.  All Alamitos teachers maintain high academic classroom expectations.  Their planning and preparation for this school year is focused on implementing a rigorous, positive, standards based, academic program which will prepare your child for a successful school year and a successful future.  Many parents ask us each year, “How can I help my child do better in school?”  Our answer is this.  At Alamitos, we believe that a parents’ direct involvement in their child’s education greatly contributes to their child’s academic success.  Therefore, open communication between the school and home is an integral part of providing your child with the best learning environment and experience.  Our website is one way to do this.  Please take a moment to view two very important documents directly related to parental involvement at Alamitos, 1) The Alamitos Parental Involvement Policy, which provides excellent insight into how parents, working with the school, can be part of the academic success of their child, and 2) The Alamitos School Compact, which is an agreement between the school, parent(s), and student acknowledging our respective parts as an important piece to your child’s academic success.

Furthermore, the below are minimum expectations of all our students.  If your personal expectations are even higher for your child, then please feel free to use these expectations as a template to specifically spell out what you expect of your child.  We believe these expectations to be so important that you will also recognize them as the major part of the student portion of the Alamitos School Compact.  The bottom line to all of this is that Alamitos is here to educate children and to give them the best possible opportunity for success in high school, college, and their future.  Therefore, to help us teach your child and prepare them to be academically successful, we encourage all parents to actively be a part in your child’s education; hold your child accountable for their learning, academic performance, and behavior; seek the school’s assistance whenever you need us for anything; stay informed of and attend upcoming school events designed to give you important information, such as Back to School Night, Open House, Parent Nights, ELAC meetings, Ten Commandments for Parents Workshops; and finally, talk to your child about their current areas of study, homework, class work, upcoming tests and quizzes, and Benchmark exams.

In addition, we also send flyers home with our students announcing upcoming events, and often utilize our Teleparent message delivery system as a way to communicate more frequently with parents in their primary language.  Our marquee in the front of the school also has important dates and information that you will find useful.  However, I invite all parents to contact us directly if you have any questions regarding your child or school events.  Spanish, Vietnamese, and Korean translators are available to assist you.

Parents, I encourage you to review these expectations and use them to set goals and establish guidelines with your child for homework completion, study time, and grades.  We will be happy to assist you in creating these guidelines with you and your child.

Students, the Alamitos staff and your parents expect and require you to actively participate in your education by learning the California Content Standards in the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and history.  Using a variety of instructional strategies and techniques, your teachers will provide you with access to the 7th and 8th grade content standards by creating and implementing standards based lessons.  If you are having difficulty meeting these academic standards, there will be plenty of opportunities to get extra help.  Make sure that you take advantage of them.

Giving Every Child, Every Chance, Everyday is our school motto this year.  Together and with hard work, we can turn this motto into a reality for all of Alamitos’ students.  We are looking forward to this school year, and are very happy to have you with us.  Go Condors!!
